Opening hours in Crete follow a rhythm shaped by the Mediterranean climate. During summer, most supermarkets open from around 8am and close at 9pm Monday to Friday, with slightly shorter hours on Saturday (closing around 6pm). Some supermarkets in resort areas open on Sundays during peak season.
General shops typically open from 9am to 2pm, with some also opening again in the evening from around 5:30pm to 9pm on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Shops are generally closed on Sunday.
Banks open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 2:30pm and Friday from 8am to 1:30pm. They are closed on weekends and public holidays.
Pharmacies keep standard shop hours. A duty pharmacy roster operates outside of those hours; the open pharmacy for each period is listed in the window of every closed pharmacy. The list is in Greek, so asking your accommodation for help is the easiest option.
Petrol stations in and around Hersonissos and on main roads typically open from around 6am to 10pm. Some operate on Sundays in summer; rural and more remote stations may have limited hours.
Crete has a classic Mediterranean climate. Summers (June through August) are hot, dry, and reliably sunny, with temperatures in Hersonissos typically ranging from 27 to 35 degrees Celsius. The sea is warm throughout the summer season and well into September. Humidity is generally low on the north coast, kept comfortable by the Meltemi wind that blows across the Aegean in July and August. Light evening clothing is all you'll need for most nights, though a layer is worth having for late evenings or air-conditioned venues.
Hersonissos sits on the north coast of Crete, approximately 26 km east of Heraklion. The island runs on Eastern European Summer Time (EEST), which is UTC+3 from late March through to late October. That puts Crete 2 hours ahead of the UK and Central Europe in summer, and 3 hours ahead of the US East Coast.
A few things worth knowing before you arrive:
The afternoon siesta is real. Roughly between 2pm and 5:30pm, many local businesses, small shops, and offices close or go quiet. The heat is at its peak and life slows down accordingly. Plan around it rather than against it.
Greet people. A kalimera (good morning) or kalispera (good evening) when entering a shop or speaking to someone new is standard courtesy and always appreciated.
Dress respectfully at religious sites. When visiting churches or monasteries, shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women. A light scarf or shawl in your bag is practical and respectful. Beachwear is for the beach; walking through towns or villages in swimwear is generally frowned upon.
Tipping. Not mandatory, but appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving around 5 to 10 percent in tavernas is customary for good service. For taxis, rounding up the fare is sufficient.
Pace. Greeks live at a slower, more generous pace than many northern Europeans are used to. Meals are unhurried, service is warm but not rushed, and the philosophy of siga siga (slowly, slowly) runs through everything. Lean into it.
English is very widely spoken in Hersonissos and across the tourist areas of north Crete. Staff at hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, shops, and most tourist-facing businesses will speak English comfortably. Greek is of course the local language, and a few words go a long way.
A handful of useful phrases: kalimera (good morning), kalispera (good evening), efharisto (thank you), parakalo (please or you're welcome), and yamas (cheers). Locals genuinely appreciate the effort, however small.
Greece is part of the Eurozone, so the currency is the euro (€). All major cards are accepted at hotels, supermarkets, larger restaurants, petrol stations, and most tourist-facing businesses in Hersonissos. Contactless payments are standard at most larger establishments, and Apple Pay and Google Pay work wherever contactless terminals are available.
Cash is still worth carrying for smaller tavernas, local markets, taxis, and any smaller or more traditional establishments that may not accept cards. ATMs are widely available in Hersonissos and across the north coast.

DIO is a boutique beach club nestled on the shores of Hersonissos, where the Aegean meets world-class music. The beach sits at the centre of the DIO experience: sunbeds, handcrafted cocktails, food delivered to your spot, and carefully curated sounds from the DJ programme as the afternoon unfolds. It is a place where luxury, nature, and music converge into something designed to be savoured slowly.
Yes. The DIO beach is open to day visitors as well as suite guests and event attendees. You can book a sunbed and enjoy the beach, kiosk, and bar without attending an event or staying in the suites. The beach is part of the core DIO experience.
Food and drinks are served directly to your sunbed by the DIO kiosk team. There is no need to leave your spot. Simply order from the beach menu and the team will bring everything to you.
Each sunbed costs €10 in total. A €5 deposit per sunbed is paid online at the time of booking, with the remaining €5 settled on arrival at the venue.
Yes. Sunbeds are available to book in advance through the DIO website. A deposit of €5 per sunbed is required at the time of booking to secure your reservation, with the remaining €5 balance payable on arrival. Each sunbed costs €10 in total.
Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability, but booking ahead is recommended during busy periods in July and August.
DIO sits on one of the only pure sand beaches in Hersonissos. Most of the coastline in the area is rocky or pebbly, so the soft sand at DIO is genuinely rare and one of the things that sets it apart. The water is crystal clear and the beach is kept in excellent condition throughout the season.
For suite bookings and availability enquiries, contact the DIO reservations team directly by email at stay@dio.life or by phone at +30 697 455 1505. You can also book online through the DIO Cloudbeds reservations page linked from the Stay page on the website.
Yes. Daily housekeeping is included for all suite guests throughout your stay.
Yes. Cribs are available on request for all suites. Please mention this at the time of booking so we can ensure one is prepared before your arrival. Note that DIO is an age 16 and over venue for all events and general access to the venue spaces, so while infants can be accommodated in the suites themselves, the venue programme is not designed for young children.
Yes. All four suites can be rented as a group for exclusive use of the full property. This is ideal for larger parties, celebrations, or groups who want to take over the entire DIO accommodation alongside the venue experience. Contact us at stay@dio.life to discuss group availability and rates.
Each suite accommodates up to 4 guests. For groups looking to take over the full property across multiple suites, please contact us directly at stay@dio.life to discuss availability and options.
DIO has three bookable beachfront suites, each with a private balcony overlooking the venue and the Mediterranean.
DIO 1 is a 50sqm first-floor studio suite with a king bed and two king singles. DIO 2 is a 60sqm first-floor studio suite with the same bed configuration. DIO 4 is a 31sqm ground-floor studio with a king bed, two king singles, and a small sofa.
The DIO suites are open throughout the summer season, running in line with the main venue programme from June through to the end of August. Availability outside of this window may be limited; please contact us directly for enquiries outside the core season.
Yes. Suite guests have full access to the DIO kiosk, bar, and restaurant throughout their stay. Lunch can be delivered directly to your balcony, and the bar and kiosk are available during venue opening hours. On event days, the full food and beverage programme is available as part of the wider venue experience.
The suites are best suited to couples or small groups looking for a boutique, design-led stay in a venue with a strong music and events identity. DIO is an age 16 and over venue, so all guests staying in the suites must be 16 or older. For groups requiring multiple suites, please contact us directly to discuss availability across the full property.
Yes. Guest parking is available on site for suite guests. If you are driving to DIO, please let us know at the time of booking so we can confirm availability and provide directions.
Check-in is from 3pm. Check-out is by 10am. The property offers 24-hour arrival, meaning you can check in at any hour of the day or night regardless of your travel schedule, though the suite itself is prepared and ready from 3pm. Check-in and check-out are fully contactless.

Bookings are subject to availability, and we recommend reserving well in advance for peak summer dates in July and August.
Yes. The suites overlook the venue directly. SUNSETS, HEDONISM, and DIONYSIA all take place below, so guests staying at DIO have an elevated view of the full event from their own private space. Suite guests attending ticketed events (HEDONISM and DIONYSIA) will still need a valid ticket for entry to the event floor.
The day at DIO is yours to shape. Morning swims directly from the beachfront, yoga on the grass, coffee at the kiosk, and lunch delivered to your balcony. Air-conditioned afternoons when the Cretan sun is at its most intense, and then as the light softens and the music builds, a front-row view of one of the most sought-after venues on the island. On SUNSETS evenings, the DJ programme begins at 5pm directly below. On HEDONISM and DIONYSIA nights, the full event production unfolds from your suite's vantage point.
Each suite includes air conditioning, WiFi, a hairdryer, a coffee maker, luxury bedding, and a safety deposit box. Linens and towels are laundered to local authority standards, and daily housekeeping is provided. All suites have a private balcony, and outdoor furniture is available across the property.
Suite guests also have full access to shared venue facilities including the beachfront, beach chairs and loungers, bar, kiosk, and restaurant. Guest parking is available on site. All rooms are non-smoking. Invoices are available for corporate bookings.
Yes. DIO has four luxury boutique suites, each situated directly above the Mediterranean on the beachfront in Hersonissos. The suites are designed for guests who want to live inside the DIO experience fully, from morning swims and balcony lunches through to an unobstructed view of the evening's music events below.
Yes. Alongside the guest and headline programme, DIO has resident artists who play across multiple events throughout the season. Viktor Mar, a Hersonissos local with over 15 years of professional experience, is among the key residents, bringing a deep familiarity with the venue and its crowd to every set. Zanderberg and Benny Romeo also feature regularly across the season.
The DIO events page lists all upcoming events with their headline and support artists, dates, and times. Each event has its own page with full artist information. For ticketed events (HEDONISM and DIONYSIA), the event link also takes you directly to the Weeztix ticketing page for that date.
Yes. DIO's programme includes artists who go beyond a traditional DJ set. Double Touch is a live electronic duo combining classical piano, live drums, and electronic production. Maanqi pairs DJ sets with fully improvised live tenor saxophone. These live elements are part of what makes DIO's music programme distinct from a standard beach club lineup.
Yes. Most artists on the DIO programme have a presence across Spotify, SoundCloud, and other streaming platforms. The best place to start is each artist's profile page on the DIO website, where you'll find direct links to their streaming profiles and, where available, embedded Spotify players so you can listen before you arrive.
Yes. DIO's programme brings together a mix of internationally touring headliners and artists with strong regional and scene-level reputations. GRAMMY-winning producer Afrojack, Serbian label boss and producer Space Motion, live electronic duo Double Touch, and Dutch artist Freddy Moreira are among the internationally recognised names on the 2026 roster. Alongside them, a strong support programme features artists whose sounds are equally well matched to the DIO setting.
SUNSETS features a rotating programme of DJs across the season, with both resident artists and special guests joining throughout the summer. Artists including Zanderberg, Maanqi, and Marasi have featured in the SUNSETS programme, bringing a range of sounds suited to the late afternoon and early evening atmosphere. Check the DIO events page for the full schedule.
DIO's 2026 season features a strong lineup of headline artists across HEDONISM and DIONYSIA, including Space Motion, Double Touch, Afrojack, Freddy Moreira, Eran Hersh, Joezi, and &friends, among others. The full programme with dates is available on the DIO events page.
DIO's music programme is rooted in the deeper, more soulful side of electronic music. Across the three event series, you'll hear Afro House, Organic House, Melodic House, Melodic Techno, and peak-hour House. The sound is warm, sun-drenched, and intentional; built for a beachfront setting and an audience that listens as much as it dances.
SUNSETS leans into more atmospheric, melodic sounds as the sun goes down. HEDONISM moves through Afro, Organic, and peak-hour House as the night builds. DIONYSIA brings headline artists who each bring their own distinct sound to the programme, so the flavour of each event varies accordingly.
Yes. Search for DIO Hersonissos on Google Maps for the most accurate pin. The venue is located directly on the beachfront in Hersonissos, on the northern coast. If you're using a navigation app, searching "DIO beach club Hersonissos" should bring up the correct location. Our street address is Themistokleous 9, Limenas Chersonisou 700 14, Greece.
DIO sits in Hersonissos, one of the north coast's most established resort towns. The immediate neighbouring areas are:
Stalida (Stalis) -- around 5 km east, a quieter, family-friendly beach resort with a long sandy shore.
Malia -- around 8 km east, a lively coastal town with its own beaches, nightlife, and the impressive Minoan Palace of Malia archaeological site.
Heraklion -- the island capital, approximately 26 km to the west, home to Knossos Palace, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Venetian harbour, and the main ferry port.
Knossos Palace is approximately 25 km west of Hersonissos, a 30 to 35-minute drive. It's one of the most significant archaeological sites in Europe and well worth a visit before or after a day at DIO. Taxis between Hersonissos and Knossos typically cost €30 to €40 each way.
Hersonissos is approximately 26 km east of Heraklion city centre, around a 30-minute drive along the E75 national road. Taxis between the two run regularly and cost in the region of €35 to €45 depending on traffic and time of day.
Yes. Heraklion Port is the main ferry hub for Crete and is well connected to Piraeus (Athens), Santorini, and other Aegean islands. Overnight ferries from Piraeus to Heraklion run daily throughout the summer and take around 8 to 9 hours. High-speed ferries from Santorini to Heraklion take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. From Heraklion Port, Hersonissos is a straightforward 25-minute taxi or transfer ride east along the coast road.
Ferry bookings can be made through operators including Seajets, Blue Star Ferries, and Minoan Lines, or via aggregator sites such as Ferryhopper.
Yes. KTEL buses run regularly along the north coast road between Heraklion and the eastern resorts, stopping in Hersonissos. If you're staying locally in Hersonissos, Stalida, or Malia, the venue is easy to reach without a car. Check current KTEL schedules for up-to-date timetables, as evening services can be less frequent.
Yes. Taxis are widely available in Hersonissos and across the surrounding area. You can hail one on the street, ask your accommodation to arrange one, or use a local taxi app. For event nights, we recommend booking your return taxi in advance rather than relying on finding one outside the venue at the end of the night, particularly during busy periods in July and August.
DIO does offer some limited parking on site. Hersonissos has on-street parking available in the area around the venue. Availability can be limited during busy summer evenings, particularly on event nights, so we recommend arriving with extra time if you're driving. A number of public and private car parks are also dotted around the town centre.
For HEDONISM and DIONYSIA nights we'd strongly encourage guests to consider arriving by taxi or transfer rather than driving, both for convenience and so everyone can enjoy the evening without restriction.
There are three main options from Heraklion Airport to Hersonissos:
Taxi -- The fastest and most convenient option. Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall and the fare to Hersonissos is approximately €30 to €40 for the cab (not per person). The journey takes around 25 minutes in normal traffic. Agree the fare with the driver before setting off; a fare board in the arrivals hall lists agreed rates to key destinations.
Pre-booked transfer -- Several local companies offer private airport transfers. Worth booking in advance if you're arriving late or travelling with a group and luggage.
Bus -- A cheaper option, though it involves getting to the central Heraklion bus station first (a short taxi ride or 2 km walk from the airport), then boarding a KTEL regional bus east towards Hersonissos. The journey takes 30 to 45 minutes and tickets cost a few euros. Buses run every 30 to 60 minutes during the day.
The closest airport to DIO is Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (HER), approximately 22 km west of Hersonissos. It's a straightforward drive along the E75 national road and takes around 25 minutes without heavy traffic. This is the airport to use for the vast majority of visitors arriving in summer, as it receives direct flights from across Europe.
Chania International Airport (CHQ) is the island's other main airport, roughly 130 km to the west. It's a viable option if flights are significantly cheaper or more convenient from your departure city, but factor in the additional 90-minute drive along the north coast road.
DIO is an age 16 and over venue. This applies to all events, including SUNSETS, HEDONISM, and DIONYSIA. Valid ID may be required on entry. Please do not purchase tickets for guests under 16.
DIO's 2026 season features a strong programme of international and regional electronic music artists across SUNSETS, HEDONISM, and DIONYSIA. You can view the full lineup and upcoming event dates on the DIO events page, where each event lists its headline and support artists.
DIONYSIA does not have a formal dress code, but the night has an elevated atmosphere and guests typically dress accordingly. Smart casual is a good benchmark. For specific events, any dress guidance will be noted on the event page.
HEDONISM has a strict dress code: white, gold, or silver only. This applies to all guests. Guests not meeting the dress code may be refused entry. The dress code is part of what makes HEDONISM the night it is, so we ask that all guests respect it.
Ticket transfers are handled through Weeztix. Please log into your Weeztix account to check the transfer options available for your booking. DIO is not able to process ticket transfers directly, so please contact Weeztix support if you need assistance.
All ticket sales are final. We do not offer refunds on purchased tickets. In the unlikely event that DIO cancels or significantly reschedules an event, affected ticket holders will be contacted directly with options. If you have a specific query about your booking, please get in touch with us via the contact page.
All tickets for HEDONISM and DIONYSIA are sold through our official Weeztix ticketing page. You can find the link to each event on the DIO events page or by visiting the DIO Weeztix Shop directly.
Yes. Both HEDONISM and DIONYSIA are ticketed events. Entry is not guaranteed on the door, so we strongly recommend purchasing in advance through our Weeztix ticketing page. Tickets are event-specific, so make sure you're purchasing for the correct date.
No. SUNSETS is a free-to-attend event for all guests at DIO. You do not need to purchase a ticket in advance. Simply arrive at the venue from 5pm and enjoy the programme. Sunbed reservations are available separately if you'd like to secure your spot on the beach.
SUNSETS runs from 5pm till 11pm. HEDONISM and DIONYSIA both run from 5pm till 11:30pm. All times are local Crete time (EEST, UTC+3). Gates open at 5pm and the music programme begins shortly after.
DIONYSIA is DIO's Sunday ticketed event, running from 5pm till 11:30pm. Each DIONYSIA features a headline artist from the international electronic music circuit alongside a support programme. It's a full production event with a larger lineup and an elevated atmosphere. Tickets are required and available through our Weeztix ticketing page.
HEDONISM is DIO's Thursday night ticketed event. It's a dress-code occasion celebrating house music at its most indulgent, with a programme of Afro, Organic, and peak-hour House from 5pm till 11:30pm. The dress code is strictly white, gold, or silver. Tickets are required and available through our Weeztix ticketing page.
SUNSETS is DIO's daily DJ programme, running every afternoon from 5pm till 11pm. It's a free-to-attend experience for guests at the venue, set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean as the sun meets the sea. Expect a mix of Afrohouse, Organic House, and melodic sounds, with special guest DJs joining the programme throughout the season.
DIO runs three events throughout the summer season. SUNSETS is our daily DJ programme, running every afternoon from 5pm as the sun goes down. HEDONISM is a ticketed Thursday night event with a strict white, gold, or silver dress code and a house music programme spanning Afro, Organic, and peak-hour House. DIONYSIA is our Sunday ticketed event, bringing headline artists from across the global electronic music circuit for a full production night from 5pm till 11:30pm.
